Lorem Ipsum Generator

Generate placeholder text for your designs.

How the Generator Works

Set a paragraph count from 1 to 20, click Generate, and copy the result with one click. Each paragraph is assembled from the classic lorem ipsum vocabulary — lorem, ipsum, dolor, sit, amet, consectetur… — with a randomized length of roughly 40 to 80 words, so every run produces natural-looking variation instead of the same block repeated. Three paragraphs gives you around 150–200 words; the full 20 paragraphs lands near 1,200 — enough to stress-test a long article layout.

Why Designers Use Fake Latin

Placeholder text solves a real problem: when a mockup contains readable English, reviewers read it — and give feedback on the words instead of the layout. Lorem ipsum has word lengths and sentence rhythm close to natural language, but because it's meaningless, the eye evaluates typography, spacing, line length and hierarchy without getting hijacked by content. That's why it has survived as the industry standard since dry-transfer Letraset sheets in the 1960s, and in print shops long before that.

Where It Comes From

The passage is scrambled from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise on ethics written by Cicero in 45 BC. The famous opening "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is a truncation of "dolorem ipsum" — pain itself — from a sentence about pursuing pain for its own sake. Centuries of typesetters chopping and reshuffling the text turned it into the not-quite-Latin we use today.

Using Placeholder Text Well

  • Match realistic lengths. A headline slot should be tested with 3–8 words, not a full paragraph. Trim the generated text to plausible sizes and verify with the word counter or character counter.
  • Test the extremes. Generate one long run for the "German compound noun" scenario and a short one for sparse content — layouts break at the edges, not the average.
  • Swap it out before launch. Shipping "lorem ipsum" to production is a classic embarrassment; search your codebase for it as a pre-release check.
  • It's not for SEO testing. Search engines can't rank meaningless text — use real draft copy once content strategy starts.

Generation happens entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server, and there are no usage limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lorem ipsum?
Scrambled pseudo-Latin used as placeholder text in design and typesetting. It mimics the rhythm of natural language without readable meaning, so reviewers focus on layout instead of content.
How many paragraphs can I generate?
Between 1 and 20 per run — roughly 40 to 80 words each, so up to about 1,200 words at the maximum setting. Click Generate again for a fresh batch anytime.
Is the text the same every time?
No. Paragraph lengths and word order are randomized on every generation, so repeated runs produce different, natural-looking text instead of one repeated block.
Is lorem ipsum real Latin?
Almost. It derives from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC), but centuries of typesetters altered and scrambled it, so it no longer parses as proper Latin.
Can I use the generated text commercially?
Yes. Lorem ipsum is public-domain placeholder text — use it freely in client mockups, templates and commercial projects.
